Accuracy

How Perfect Dictation gets your words right: the languages it understands, British or American spelling, teaching it names and specialist terms, and what to do when one word keeps coming out wrong. It tidies what you say without ever changing what you meant.

Which languages can I speak?

Dozens, including English, Thai, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Hindi and Arabic, and you can mix languages in one sentence.

Tell it the languages you speak in Settings. It then listens for those and never guesses a language you do not use, which matters most for short clips.

British or American spelling?

Your choice, in Settings. It applies everywhere you dictate: colour or color, organise or organize, travelled or traveled.

Names and words in your dictionary are always spelt exactly the way you saved them, whichever spelling you choose.

What about names and jargon?

Add them to your dictionary in Settings, or use Fix a word on any dictation in History once. From then on they are spelt your way: client names, product names, medical or legal terms, people at work.

Your dictionary follows you to every PC you sign in on.

It keeps mishearing one word

Add it to the dictionary together with what it hears, for example "Siam (heard as Sam)". The speech engine is told to listen for the right word, and the clean-up corrects it if it still slips through.

Two or three entries like this usually fix a word for good. If one never settles, open a ticket and include the word; we look at those by hand.

Will it change what I meant?

No. The clean-up tidies punctuation, removes fillers like "um" and "you know", and keeps only the final version when you correct yourself ("Tuesday, no, Wednesday" becomes "Wednesday").

It never adds names, facts, numbers or sign-offs you did not say. If you want it to rewrite more freely, that is a choice you make with a style.

Can I see what was changed?

Yes. Every dictation in History shows what you actually said, with the removed words struck through, next to what was written.

If you ever want the raw version, copy it from there. You can also redo any dictation in a different style without speaking again.

Does my accent matter?

Much less than you might think. The speech engine is trained on speech from all over the world, so British, American, Australian, Indian, Thai and many other accents are all normal to it.

Speak at your normal pace rather than slowing down; it copes better with natural speech. Use the dictionary for any word it keeps missing.

Does background noise matter?

A normal office, café or open-plan room is fine. Loud music, a TV right next to you or several people talking over you will lower accuracy, the same as it would for a person taking notes.

A headset microphone makes the biggest difference in noisy places, because it hears you far more than the room.
