The short answer
Click into a text box first, then hold the key. Some apps run as administrator and block typing from normal apps; the text waits in History to paste.
First, check History
Open History from the tray icon. If your dictation is there, the speech side worked and only the typing step did not. Copy it from there and paste it with Ctrl + V.
Common causes
| Cause | Fix |
|---|---|
| No text box had the focus | Click into the box first, so the cursor blinks there |
| The app runs as administrator | Windows blocks typing into it; paste from History |
| The focus moved while you talked | Keep the window in front until the text appears |
| You are offline | The clip waits and sends itself when you reconnect |
| Nothing was heard | Check the microphone with the mic test in Settings |
Apps running as administrator
Windows does not allow normal apps to type into programs started "as administrator", as a security rule. If you always run one program that way, you will need to paste from History there. If the program does not need administrator rights, start it normally and dictation works.
If History is empty too
Then nothing was recorded. Check that the microphone is allowed and working: see My microphone is off.
