The short answer
The one you pick in Settings, or the Windows default. Headsets and USB mics usually beat a laptop mic in a noisy room.
Choosing one
- Open the app's Settings.
- Choose a microphone from the list, or leave it on the Windows default.
- Run the mic test: speak and watch the level move.
If you leave it on the default, Perfect Dictation follows whatever Windows uses, so plugging in a headset switches to it automatically when Windows does.
Which is best
| Microphone | Accuracy | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Headset with a boom mic | Best | Hears you, not the room; ideal for open-plan offices |
| USB desk microphone | Very good | Great at one desk in a quiet room |
| Earbuds with a mic | Good | Convenient; Bluetooth call mode can soften the sound |
| Laptop built-in mic | Fine in quiet rooms | Also hears the fan and keyboard |
| Webcam mic | Fair | Usually far from your mouth |
Getting the most from any microphone
- Keep it a hand's width or two from your mouth.
- Speak at your normal volume. There is no need to raise your voice.
- Point a desk microphone at you, not at the screen.
