The short answer
No. It is off unless you turn it on, and then it only counts characters and backspaces in each burst of typing. Never which key, and never the text.
What it is for
Perfect Dictation shows how much time dictating saves you. To be honest about that figure, it needs to know how fast you really type. There are two ways to tell it: take the free speed test once, or switch on typing rhythm, which measures your everyday typing speed as you work.
What it counts
- How many characters you type in each burst of typing.
- How many times you press backspace in that burst.
- How long the burst took.
From that it works out your typing speed and how much you correct yourself.
What it never records
- Which keys you press.
- Any text at all: no words, no letters, no passwords.
- Anything in password boxes, which it skips entirely.
- Which app or website you were typing in, beyond the app's name.
A keylogger records what you type. Typing rhythm only counts how much, and how fast.
Off by default
Typing rhythm is off until you turn it on in Settings, and you can turn it off again at any time. You never need it: the speed test gives the time saved figure just as well.
