The short answer
Yes. After you have opened it once, it starts when Windows does and waits in the tray, so the talk key works straight away. You can turn this off.
Why it starts with Windows
Dictation is only useful if it is there the moment you want it. Starting with Windows means the talk key works as soon as you sign in, without remembering to open anything. It waits quietly in the tray and uses very little memory until you talk.
What you see at start-up
When Windows starts it, Perfect Dictation goes straight to the tray, with no window, so it does not get in your way. When you open it yourself from the Start menu, the main window opens.
Turning it off or on
Either of these works:
- In the app: open Settings and go to Start-up.
- In Windows: open Settings, Apps, Startup, and switch Perfect Dictation off or on.
Windows has the final say. If you switched it off in Windows' own Startup apps list, only Windows can switch it back on: the app shows you where. On a company PC, your organisation may decide it for you.
Starting it by hand
If start-up is off, open Perfect Dictation from the Start menu whenever you want to dictate. It stays in the tray until you quit it from the tray menu.
